William Street makover improves access between Herne Bay and seafront

Residents are set to benefit from improvements to the pedestrian access between Herne Bay's town centre and the seafront, completed today.

The William Street Project, supported by the East Kent Partnership (EKP), was proposed by Canterbury City Council in efforts to increase the number of visitors to the area and improve the street's appearance.

The project took approximately nine months and has involved completely restructuring the existing access. The pavement and kerbsides have been widened, lowered and resurfaced to make it easier for residents to cross the road. The additional space has allowed improvements to the town's drainage system. New electrical supplies have been put in place, providing a convenient supply for markets and other street activities in the future.

The new William Street also boasts more street lighting, making it safer for residents who use the road to access the town's pubs and clubs at night. Street signs and information banners have also been installed and will now provide passers-by with useful visitor information about the area.

Janet Waghorn, Executive Director of the East Kent Partnership, said: "We are delighted to have supported this important project. Investment in public realm development is hugely significant for local tourism and economy, but equally important in giving Herne Bay residents a real sense of pride simply by walking through its streets. We think that the new and improved William Street will have a really positive impact on both residents and visitors alike."

The William Street Project is the second regeneration scheme in the town to have benefitted from EKP funding, following last year's improvements to Beach Alley. The partnership invested £50,000 in the project, which was supported by Kent County Council.
