Graduates have designs on East Kent

Studio Baum A design company that has recently relocated to Ramsgate from Leeds is enjoying the advantages of its move.

Studio Baum, a young design studio, moved to Thanet following research into the area's economic and cultural development that suggests the south east is an increasingly desirable business location.

The research, carried out with the help of resources such as Locate in Kent, identified that investments into the area's infrastructure, from improvements in road links to the renovation of Ramsgate's Port, and active development of the cultural identity of the region made Ramsgate a strong business location.

Following the move, Studio Baum has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund, which provides funding for organisations involved in the development of arts, cultural and creative industries.

The fund intends to enable small business start-ups and to encourage the creation of new jobs in Thanet.

Jessica Owide, founding Partner of Studio Baum, said: "Studio Baum is committed to helping both its local community and east Kent grow. We believe the area can offer the rest of the UK and Europe a huge amount of economic and cultural benefits and resources.

"We are keen to tap into these and build relationships with neighbouring businesses, allowing us to introduce our wider clientele to the region. The European Regional Development Fund will help us achieve this, allowing us to expand our business and create new jobs in Ramsgate."

The company brings with it an advanced portfolio of local, national and international clients including MTV, Sony Pictures, Turner Contemporary, Yorkshire Forward and NHS Partners.

Janet Waghorn, Executive Director of the East Kent Partnership (EKP), said: "It's great to see young companies with so much potential recognising the benefits east Kent has to offer and choosing it as the location to progress their business.

"Thanet is seeing a great deal of development that can only benefit the business community; now is the perfect time for businesses such as Studio Baum to move to the area."

The EKP will be investing £363,000 of funding into projects in and around Thanet during 2006 ‚ 2007 to help it reach its potential and contribute to East Kent's future economic growth and community well-being.

The Partnership is supporting a wide range of initiatives that will have a major impact on improvements to infrastructure, business prospects and community in the area. Supported by funding devolved from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), the chosen initiatives support the EKP's goal to help regenerate the region and encourage more companies like Studio Baum.
